"One of the most deadly movements in Chinese martial arts is Dianxue, i.e., striking with the finger at a selected point on the opponent's body, so as to incapacitate him at once for at least a short while. For 2000 years, Chinese martial artists have used this skill to subdue rivals. However, it was not until the founding of the People's Republic that the method was refined by traditional doctors to treat both common diseases and complicated ones such as cerebral palsy and poliomyelitis. This remedial form of treatment came to be known as acupressure therapy.

While acupuncture and moxibustion are widely known and practised, acupressure therapy has until recently received little attention amongst the general public. The therapy involves percussing, pressing and massaging selected acupoints and stimulation-lines on the body's surface with the fingers.

In the last seven years or so, the Bone Disease Department of the Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology under the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine has studied and applied this therapy with satisfactory results. A good collection of clinical data and scientific topical research based on modern technology have advanced the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine in this particular field.

Chinese acupressure therapy has already attracted the attention of medical workers in other countries. They have either come to China to study it, or referred their patients to acupressure specialists in China. Meanwhile, Chinese specialists have been invited to other countries to give lectures and demonstrations. The growing interest in this therapy outside of China has prompted me to write this book for the benefit of our counterparts abroad."
